Wormwood Description: Wormwood is a shrubby, aromatic, much-branched plant that grows from 2 to 4 feet in height. The growing shoots are silvery white with fine silky hairs; and the grayish-green leaves, which are from 2 to 5 inches long, are divided into small leaflets. The flower clusters, appearing from July to October, consist of numerous small, insignificant, drooping yellow heads. History: References to wormwood can be found as far back as 1600 B. C. in Egypt. Wormwood, artemisia absinthium, has been used for centuries as a moth repellant, general pesticide and as a tea/spray to repel slugs and snails. Before its toxicity was known it was used as the name implies: a worming medicine for people and animals. Propagation: Wormwood is easily propagated by division of roots in the autumn, by cuttings, or by seeds sown in the autumn soon after they are ripe. Growing Conditions: Wormwood does well in full sun and well-drained soil. Pests and Diseases: Disease and insect pests are rare when given proper cultural requirements. Other names: Absinthium, absinth, madderwort, mingwort, old woman, warmot, green ginger and southernwood. Medicinal Uses: Wormwood is used for indigestion, especially when due to a deficient quantity or quality of gastric juice. When used topically, wormwood is used as a liniment or compress for bruises, sore muscles, bites and pain. It is often used as an insect repellent, and made into a spray to deter pests in organic gardening. Other uses: The silver foliage of wormwood provides excellent contrast to flowering plants and green foliage in borders and herb gardens. |
